This week Tang (Lucy Liu) has a really bad day on TNT’s fantastic cop series “Southland”. After being served with divorce papers she is pissed off and determined to make everyone as miserable as she is. First by giving a guy a ticket when waiting for his wife with a broken leg and then by shooting a teen with a “toy gun”. This causes some tension with her partner Cooper who realizes that she tampered with the toy gun. Cooper is so disturbed by the whole thing that he has to see his sponsor. Meanwhile, Sammy is still pissed at Ben for questioning his integrety and isn’t ready to forgive him even though he stops a deranged, broken bottle wielding, rape victim from stabbing him. Really hope the two off them can work things out beacuse the comrodery they had was a fun aspect of the show. Lydia is not ready to let anyone know she is pregnant even though they all suspect it. Her partner Robinson (Dorian Missick) is actually starting to grow on me. It is nice to see Lydia have the same partner for more than a few episodes. It’s nice to see that he still has her back even though she wont come clean to him about the pregnancy. “Southland” airs Tuesday’s 10pm on TNT, I for one have my DVR set to record.
This week we saw just how much the officers on “Southland” care about the people and even the animals they protect. Between a homeless ex-marine, a dog that’s been shot, and an unplanned pregnancy the cops of L.A. are dedicated to not leaving any man, animal or fetus behind. The biggest news this week is that Lydia is pregnant and trying to figure out if she should become a mother. What makes this particularly hard for her is that both her mother and doctor seem to subtly encourage her to get an abortion (ouch!). Dying to know who the father is and how the pregnancy will play out in the rest of the season. Cooper finally gets to learn a bit more about his new partner Tang and I am really hoping a romance blossoms between them. Hell if anyone deserves to get laid on that show its Cooper. It is really amazing how “Southland” manages to fit so many different cases in each episode and the show is so great that some moments come across more like an episode of “Cops” then a scripted drama. Watch this show! “Southland” airs on USA 10pm Tuesday nights. I for one have my DVR set to record and so should you !
“Southland” has all the action of a big budget movie and the complex characters of a HBO series, it’s hard to belive this show was almost canceled (smart move NBC). Bokeem Woodbine is back this week for his third appearance as Officer Jones and really adds a nice touch to the ensemble cast. A severed hand, a spontaneous combustion masturbation, a cat loving NRA member, and a guest appearance by Marla Gibbs from the TV show classic “227” are only part of what makes this episode awesome! Carl Lumbly is a new Captain and he isn’t going to settle for anything but the best from his officers. While this is the type of leadership Sherman had wanted, he is really starting to learn that the only thing black and white about being a cop are the cars. There is some great hidden meta-humor with Marla Hill’s character mistaking Regina King for her “Brenda” character from “227”. Another great guest appearance this week is from Glenn Plummer (Speed, Showgirls), as a wrongly convicted man who enacted revenge. Lucy Liu has been doing a really nice job and I have never enjoyed her more. I wonder is there will be any romance between her and Cooper. If you are not watching “Southland” now you will! Don’t be a follower and get in now! It airs on TNT @ 10pm Tuesday nights. I for one have my DVR set to record!
